Tabs from other Devices
2025-08
Did you know that in Chrome on Android, when you have more than 99 tabs open, the tab counter changes to a smiley face emoji? Care to guess how I know? Anyway, here's a dump of various things I've either read or intended to read. It's been a while, so there's... a lot.
- English as She is Spoke - An English phrase book by someone who doesn't speak English. Hilarious and fascinating.
- Explorable Explorations - A wonderful collection of interactive pieces exploring lots of interesting subjects.
- How flash games shaped the video game industry - A look back at the Flash's influence and games and game development. For me, a nostalgia-twinged look back at a simpler, more independent, and (in some ways) more fun Internet.
- Post-Processing Shaders as a Creative Medium - I went down the Shaders-as-art rabbit hole. It's not something I can do, yet, but perhaps someday.
- Learn Shader Programming with Rick and Morty - Another interesting use of shaders.
- Celebrate Languages - I just had to note this one because I can't tell if it's a work of genius, madness, or both.
- GameDev.city - Like a mini HackerNews, but just for game dev.
- It's not a crime if we do it with an app - Algorithms as price fixing.
- Cognitive load is what matters - Clear, concise code.
- Why NASA Only Needs Pi To So Many Decimal Places - I'm always amazed at how little precision is actually necessary to calculate incredible things.
- Egoless Engineering -
- Nestflix - A Netflix-like UI to shows-within-shows, if that makes any sense.
- Storing times for human events - Turns out time and timezones are complex. Go figure.
- The 6 Mistakes You're Going to Make as a New Manager - I've made all these mistakes and more.
- IMG_0001 - A fascianting look at videos sent directly from iPhones to YouTube. There's something so human about it.
- Does Your Code Pass The Turkey Test? - In addition to time and timezones being complex, localization is ALSO complex!
- December Adventure - Like Advent of Code Light, and also something I completely forgot to do in December.
- Why did Windows 95 setup use three operating systems? - Did you know Windows 95 setup used three operating systems? Now you do, and you can also learn why!
- What Color is Your Function? - An allegory for a certain, viral programming concept.
- WaveDrom - Need to draw timing charts?
- The Maker Skill Trees Project - Neat project with templates for making IRL Maker Skill Trees.
- TIL: 8 versions of UUID and when to use them - Learn more about UUIDs than you ever thought possible or necessary!
- Bug squash: An underrated interview question - I interview a lot and find this to be a quite effective strategy.
- Algorithms we develop software by - Insightful thoughts on how development works
- Do Quests, Not Goals - I'm not 100% sold on this, but I do like the idea of framing things as "quests".
- The bizarre secrets I found investigating corrupt Winamp skins - Really whips the llama's ass.
- Typst - An easier LaTeX alternative.
- PostgreSQL is Enough - Is there anything PostegreSQL can't do?
- Ode to a world-saving idea - Thoughts on our tendency to put too much stock in a person's character and not enough in the situation.
- Stop Trying To Schedule A Call With Me - Seriously!
- Related words - Sorry this is just an image with no textual representation. I came across this randomly and loved it. I adore etymology, and how our history is woven into our language, and how language connects to each other and our ancestors.
- Math on a Checkerboard - I love using very simple things and procedures to produce seemingly complicated or impossible results.
- Collection of insane and fun facts about SQLite - SQLite is absolutely amazing.
- That's Not an Abstraction, That's Just a Layer of Indirection - I've seen a lot of over-engineering, a lot of taking "best practices" to such an absurd extreme. It's a refreshing reminder to engage your critical thinking and ask if this abstraction actually provides enough value to justify its additional cognitive load.
- The Hidden Cost of AI Coding - The drive to AI is never-ending, but so many things are being lost in the wake.
- Accountability Sinks - A long meditation on process, accountability, and flexibility.
- The Great Silence - Random and lovely short story I came upon that's absolutely worth a read.
